Located in South Central Virginia, The Hughes Center is a highly structured psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF) for youth ages 10–22 with neurodevelopmental disorders. The Hughes Center also provides private, community-based educational services for students with disabilities in grades 5–12. We provide both individualized and holistic care for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in a nurturing, family-friendly environment.
We utilize a multidisciplinary team approach to provide comprehensive evaluations and evidence-based treatment (and educational) interventions with the intent to increase each youth’s level of functional independence. Our team also works diligently to address or manage medical conditions and challenging behaviors that are often associated with individuals who are diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. We challenge our residents adapt to and apply learned skills within new environments and situations, and to maintain functional use of these skills when they return to their homes or other community-based settings.

Services for Adolescents and Young Adults
The Hughes Center provides a highly structured psychiatric residential treatment program for individuals who are diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), including autism spectrum disorder. We’re here to help youth who are experiencing significant social and behavioral difficulties within the home, school and community environments.
The Hughes Educational Center
In addition to the educational services we provide to our residential students, our private day school offers community-based educational services for students with disabilities in grades 5 through 12. The Hughes Educational Center is licensed to serve students with the following IEP classifications:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Emotional (ED), Intellectual (ID) and/or Significant Learning Disabilities (SLD)
- Other Health Impairments (OHI)
- Speech and Language Impairments (SLI)
